Analysis of the Impact of Tourism Activities on Land-Use Change in The Pelangan Tourism Area

Abstract:
The development of tourism activities can drive land-use changes, particularly in areas with significant natural tourism potential and adequate accessibility. This study aims to analyze land-use changes in the Pelangan Tourism Area between 2015 and 2025 and to examine their relationship with the development of tourism activities. The study employed a mixed-methods approach by integrating quantitative and qualitative analyses supported by Geographic Information System technology. Data were collected through the interpretation of Google Earth imagery from 2015 and 2025, field observations, a literature review, and interviews with village government officials, local residents, and business operators. The spatial analysis involved image rectification, on-screen digitization, area calculation, and overlay analysis using ArcGIS. The study area was divided into four observation zones to enable a more detailed identification of land-use change patterns. The results indicate an increase in built-up land, including residential areas, homestays, bungalows, restaurants, food stalls, kiosks, and hotel developments. Land-use changes occurred gradually and were predominantly concentrated in areas with better accessibility, proximity to coastal zones, and direct connections to centers of marine tourism activities. In contrast, areas with limited road access and inadequate supporting facilities experienced slower development. Tourism activities also created economic opportunities through the expansion of transportation services, accommodation businesses, retail activities, and local culinary enterprises. However, this development has not been adequately supported by sufficient infrastructure, safety facilities, and tourism amenities. Therefore, integrated spatial-use control and infrastructure development are required to support sustainable tourism development in the Pelangan Tourism Area.
