Abstract

College students' career planning is a crucial aspect in preparing for post-graduation success. This study aims to explore college students' motivation in career planning and the factors that influence it. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach with the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method, this study involved two 5th-semester students undergoing an internship program. Data were collected through naturalistic observation and semi-structured interviews to obtain an in-depth picture of the subjects' experiences. The results showed that internal and external factors influenced career planning. The first subject emphasized family social support and self-evaluation to set career goals. Meanwhile, the second subject prioritized the development of technical skills, personal branding, and the use of technology. Both subjects emphasized the role of self-awareness, adaptability, and proactivity as keys to building a successful career. This study concluded that successful career planning requires a balance between self-evaluation, adaptability to change, and institutional support, such as career guidance, skills training, and access to technology. Educational institutions have a strategic role in facilitating students to be better prepared to face global challenges in the world of work.
